Davis Statement on Postal Rate Case

May 04, 2006

Washington, D.C. Chairman Tom Davis (R-VA) today issued the following statement regarding the U.S. Postal Service's Board of Governors decision to seek an increase in postal rates:

"I am disappointed the Board of Governors did not see fit to wait until comprehensive postal reform legislation becomes law before making a decision on whether to seek rate increases.

"The bill that emerges from the House-Senate conference will most likely significantly alter the Postal Service's costs and may alter the process by which rate cases are decided.

"By choosing to move ahead now, the Board of Governors has taken an action that could very well wind up needing to be amended or withdrawn. That seems to be a potential waste of the resources of the Postal Service, the Postal Rate Commission, and postal stakeholders."
